Recommended Cards for DMG Wondrous Items (Misc)

Bags
IP45, HH91 - This black and white leather bag with a dragon clasp is the most common and attractive container, so I'd use it for the bags of holding.

RW89 - Plain leather and stained, this bag will serve for the bags of tricks and the handy haversack.

RW106 - Green leather with red felt lining and yellow ribbon, this quiver will serve as an efficient quiver and proxy for the scabbard of keen edges.

Adventure Gear will also be supplying us with a Sack, a Pouch, Saddlebags, and possibly a Backpack which may be useful representations of these items.

Books
HH93 - This sturdy book with parchment pages, a leather spine, and silver fittings seems robust. As such, it's a good choice for most of the golem manuals and manuals of bodily health, gainful exercise, and quickness in action.

RW91 - Crisp vellum with painted hardwood covers and a sun-like emblem, this book is suitable for the blessed book and the tomes of clear thought, leadership and influence, and understanding.

RW92 - This volume with the dried skin cover is warm to the touch, and most appropriate for the golem manual, flesh.

Various
HH96 - Glass with dark swirling liquid and a silver rune, this bottle could be a bottle of air, a decanter of endless water, an efreeti bottle, an eversmoking bottle, or an iron flask. AG 19 Flask will be another choice for some of these.

HH103 - The large dark crystal ball with an inner blue radiance is a natural for the various crystal balls, but it also works for the orb of storms.

HH105 - A rough-cut gemstone with an eroded center, this item suggests the chaos diamond, the gem of seeing, and the stones of alarm, controlling earth elementals, and good luck.

IP51 - Rough-cute amber with shining lights inside is probably the closest thing to the geometric ioun stones, and it's also my recommendation for the elemental gem and the gem of brightness.

RW 102 - This oblong, smooth, white pearl hums with power, and is perfect for the pearls of power.

RW103 - A perfectly round black sphere that absorbs light, this pearl is a good backup for the pearls of power, but it's also a possibility for a bead of force, a pearl of the sirines, a portable hole, or a well of many worlds. It is close to the DMG description of iron bands of binding, although the Adventure Gear Manacles are closer thematically. I'm also contemplating a foil version of it for a sphere of annihilation.

Recommended Cards for DMG Wondrous Items (Arms, Feet, Hands, Waist)

Arms
IP 48, HH97 - These wood bracers with metal wrapping and eye-shaped glass are the most common, and I'll use it for most bracers of armor.

HH98 - The metal armguards with small red gemstones suggest wealth and influence, so I'll make this my bracelet of friends for the time being.

RW94 - Smooth silver bound in thick cord, these look like an excellent choice for bracers of archery.

Feet
IP47, HH94 - These leather boots with painted white wings invoke movement, so I'd recommend them for boots of levitation, boots of striding and springing, winged boots, and slipper of spider climbing.

HH95 - The leather footgear with fur and dense cord wrapping looks warm but muffled, so let's make it the boots of elvenkind and the winterlands.

RW93 - These tall leather puddle jumpers with a fishtail design and saltwater scent could have water powers, but for the time being I'll call them boots of speed and teleportation. Fish are fast, right?

Hands
IP52, HH106 - Our only gloves thus far are leather with spotted fur lining and scale backing, so they can represent gloves of arrow snaring, Dexterity, storing, and swimming and climbing.

HH104 - Red-stained leather with white and black checkers, these gauntlets are are good choices for gauntlets of ogre power or rust. Some may wish to consider the Spiked Gauntlets (#36) from Relics of War for the former.

Waist
IP45 - This leather belt with three demonic faces as buckles has a monstrous aspect, so I think it's suitable as the belts of giant strength.

HH92 - Woven cloth with silver bucklers suggests wealth, and that's a good thing for a belt of dwarvenkind.

RW90 - Leather with a random geometric design, this belt might make a good monk's belt.

Reduced Prices, Relics Gallery, and EBay

Jason Bulmahn, the Item Card Lead Designer, mentioned in a discussion on Hordelings.com that the Paizo staff are using Potion cards like wands. Rather than handing out dozens of cards to represent cure light wounds potions, they'd hand out a few and keep track of how many of multiple potions as if they were charges.

I love this idea, and I've applied it to reduce the price on the Savage and Wormy Item sets on the Item Card Extravaganza. Each set now includes just one of each potion, scroll, or wand that appears multiple times in an adventure. Some of the sets can now be had for $8.50.

Over the last few days I've added descriptive text to all the Relics of War posts, and I've linked them together in the post before this one. I've also added a link to it on the right as Relics of War Gallery, so it will be easy to reference those posts or images in the future.

Last week I completed my first EBay auctions of Item Cards. This week I've got three auctions going for Hero's Hoard Potion, Scroll, and Rod/Staff/Wand subsets. The starting price is a little lower than my fixed prices, so check it out!

Dungeon Item Sets, Adventure Gear Preview #2

One of the things I'm offering on the Item Card Extravaganza are sets of item cards customized for popular Dungeon Magazine adventures. I've currently got sets listed for the first 5 adventures of the Savage Tide Adventure Path and the first 4 adventures of the Age of Worms Adventure Path. Each set includes a sheet listing all the magic items in the adventure, their location and page number, and a code to put on the item card until the item is identified by the PCs.

Jason Bulmahn posted the second preview of the Adventure Gear set last Friday. I'm looking forward to getting the cards next month and scanning them. Once I do, I'll post them here on the blog.

I missed a couple days due to illness, so I put the Complete Hero's Hoard Rings and Potions up as bonus posts. I also added descriptive text to Complete Relics of War Wondrous Items.

Recommended Cards for DMG Wondrous Items (Head, Shoulders, Eyes, Torso)

Head (Eyes)
HH99 - The silver circlet with geometric designs can represent circlets of blasting or persuasion. It is also a good choice for a certain magic item in the Age of Worms campaign, and so is part of the Whispering Cairn Item Set.

HH 102 - The velvet and bone crown with skulls and ruby eyes will be our hat of disguise, at which point the wearer can make it look like a hat or any other sort of headgear.

IP53, HH107 - The dyed fur headband with a simple symbol is the one and only choice for the headbands of intellect. It's alo my pick for the phylacteries of faithfulness and undead turning. Why? According to the DMG, a phylactery is "a small box containing religious scripture affixed to a leather cord and tied around the forehead." RW97 Cube would be another alternative.

RW100 - The silver helm with the hidden catseye diamond can easily serve as the helms of comprehend languages and read magic, telepathy, teleportation, and underwater action. It's a bit of a stretch as the helm of brilliance, but there isn't anything closer currently.

RW101 - The rust colored clay mask with real teeth is a excellent representation of the mask of the skull. I'm not sure whether the mask occupies the head or the eyes slot, but for the time being it's a reasonable proxy for the eyes of charming, doom, and petrification (eyes); the goggles of minute seeing and night (eyes); and the darkskull. I was also going to call it for the lens of detection, but the Adventure Gear set is giving us AG 30 Magnifying Glass, which is a much better match.

Shoulders (Body, Torso)
HH100 - This white cloak with golden curls and arching lines is my recommendation for the cloaks of resistance, although it could easily be switched with IP 50, HH101 below.

IP49 - The blue cloak with embroidered moons and stars suggests the cloaks of etherealness and the bat. Lacking more Robes, it's also a reasonable choice for the robes of eyes and stars (body).

IP50, HH101 - This ornate white and black cloak with gold trim and red lining will be our cloaks of Charisma.

RW95 - With a plain white exterior and a starry blue interior, this cloak looks more like a cape or mantle than the others. With that in mind, I'd use it for the cape of the mountebank, the mantles of faith and spell resistance, the cloak of the manta ray, and wings of flying. It's also a possible proxy for the carpets of flying, at least until the Adventure Gear bedroll arrives.

RW96 - This patchy green cloth and leather cloak with the eyes in back seems like camouflage to me, so I'd suggest it for the cloaks of arachnida, displacement, and elvenkind as well as the vest of escape (torso), druid's vestment (torso), and robe of blending (body).

Recommended Cards for DMG Wondrous Items (Neck)

Working on Wondrous Items was a lot quicker (and more fun) than I expected. There are only a few items of each type (Cloaks have the most at 5), so it was easy to match up many items. There was also an opportunity to be creative assigning unusual cards (Unicorn Horn, Demon Fang) as proxies for magic items with unusual shapes (pipes of haunting, figurines of wondrous power).

It's worth mentioning that I'm attaching very little weight to the magic item descriptions in the Dungeon Master's Guide. I figure the visual illustration on the cards trumps the text. Sometimes there's a good match (mask of the skull, necklace of fireballs), but not always.

I'll organize these items by the associated body slot (see Kyle Baird's analysis on the Paizo boards). First up is the neck.

Neck
IP43, HH90 Amulet - This smooth shaped jade device with a carved baboon image is the most common amulet, so I'm assigning it to the various amulets of natural armor.

IP44 Amulet - A monstrously shaped stone object with chips of gold, this amulet will serve as our amulet of mighty fists and scarab, golembane.

HH89 Amulet - The carved female figure stained in blood is creepy, but also relatively common. Let's make it an amulet of health.

RW88 Amulet - Serpentine gold with dual silver wrappings, this last amulet seems a good match for the amulets of the planes and proof against detection and location.

IP54 Necklace - Gold coils set with a large dark gemstone seem suitable for a necklace of adaptation, brooch of shielding, and scarab of protection.

HH108 Necklace - A simple necklace with golden baubles is a great match for the various necklaces of fireballs.

HH109 Periapt - The only periapt we have so far, this silver device with black jet gets to serve as periapts of health, proof against poison, wisdom, and wound closure.

RW105 Prayer Beads - No puzzles here. Brass beads with a silver trinket at the end are best used to represent strands of prayer beads.

RW108 Shrunken Head - It's got a cord on it, and since we have no other medallions, this poorly preserved rotting head makes a creepy medallion of thoughts (thanks to Duncan Clyborne for suggesting this one, and for providing paraphrased descriptions on many of these items).

RW110 Withered Hand - If you can't hang a head around your neck, why not hang a dry, twitching hand? You knew that the hand of glory and hand of the mage took up a neck slot, right?

Recommended Cards for DMG Rings

A number of people have suggested making a list of recommended item cards for the standard magic items in the Dungeon Master's Guide (DMG), so I'm going to take a crack at it, starting with potions. I'm basing my decisions on the both the card's appearance and the item's rarity according to the DMG (using cards which are in both Item Pack 1 and Hero's Hoard for common items, cards which are in Item Pack 1 only for uncommon items, and cards which only appear in the expansions for rare items). Most cards are listed with multiple items, as there are only so many item cards to choose from currently. This will change as Dragon's Trove and other expanions come along.

IP32 - Woven gold with elven script suits the higher learning of the rings of wizardry.

HH58 - This silver signet with clay humanoid stamp suggests physicality, so it's my pick for the rings of climbing, freedom of movement, jumping, regeneration, and sustenance.

IP30, HH59 - A fairly ordinary gold band with a red gemstone is a great choice for the various rings of protection.

HH 60 - The winding gold serpent with emerald eyes invokes the ideas of enchantment and water, so it's a good choice for rings of animal friendship, elemental command (water), swimming, and water walking.

IP31, HH61 - The coiled silver serpents suggests reversals, so I recommend it for the ever-popular rings of counterspells, spell storing, spell turning, and three wishes.

HH62 - The silver twisting ring with glowing symbols inside is a subtle homage to the One Ring, so I'd use it for rings of blinking, chameleon power, evasion, and invisibility.

RW57 - Molten gold band and a fire pattern gemstone demand to be used as rings of elemental command (fire) and shooting stars.

RW58 - Twisting silver with a missing gemstone suggests divination and force, so I recommend this card for rings of the ram, telekinesis, and x-ray vision.

RW59 - The plain silver band with tiny cracks reminds me of abjuration and defense, making it suitable for rings of force shield, friend shield, and mind shielding.

RW60 - The rusty iron is a close fit to the DMG description of rings of energy resistance, but I'd also find it suitable for rings of elemental command (earth).

RW61 - The black gemstone reflecting a sliver moon suggests matters above the common sphere, so let's use it for rings of djinni calling, elemental command (air), and feather falling.

Your comments are more than welcome on this list. I'll either tackle potions or wondrous items next (I'll have to chip away at that category over time, but the number of choices is greatly reduced).

Relics of War Wondrous Items

Closing out this expansion are 23 wondrous items (#88-110), including several common form factors (Amulet, Boots, Cloak, etc), several new ones (Cube, Helm, Pearl, etc), and three intriguing objects that don't necessarily correspond to magic items in the Dungeon Master's Guide: 98 Demon Fang, 108 Shrunken Head, and 109 Unicorn Horn.

88 Amulet - Serpentine gold with dual silver wrappings
89 Bag - Plain leather and stained
90 Belt - Leather with random geometric design
91 Book - Crisp vellum with painted hardwood covers
92 Book - Dried skin cover, warm to the touch
93 Boots - Tall leather with fishtail design and saltwater scent
94 Bracers - Smooth silver bound in thick cord
95 Cloak - Plain white exterior, starry blue interior
96 Cloak - Patchy green cloth and leather with eyes in back
97 Cube - Tarnished iron with black bar patterns
98 Demon Fang - Stained with blood
99 Feather - White feather ripples in still air
100 Helm - Silver with hidden catseye diamond
101 Mask - Rust colored clay with real teeth
102 Pearl - Oblong, smooth, and white; hums with power
103 Pearl - Perfectly round black sphere absorbs light
104 Powder - Small glass tube with very fine black ash
105 Prayer Beads - Brass beads with silver trinket
106 Quiver - Green leather with red felt lining and yellow ribbon
107 Salve - Clay jar of creamy substance with clove scent
108 Shrunken Head - Poorly preserved and rotting
109 Unicorn Horn - Cleanly severed
110 Withered Hand - Dry and twitching

This assortment of wondrous items outshines the rest of the expansion, in my opinion. Several of the items will be crucial in the Age of Worms and Savage Tide adventure paths, and the rest are just darn attractive. My current favorite is 103 Pearl, for its resemblance to a certain artifact.

Relics of War Rods, Staves, and Wands

Hmm, looks like my plan to showcase images of the cards in Relics of War has changed from seven days to seven business days. Without ado, here are the sixteen rods, staves, and wands in the set (#72-87).

72 Rod - Steel with six multicolored gemstones
73 Rod - Metal with ghostly cap and skull and bone motif
74 Staff - Black iron with beating heart bound by metal cords
75 Staff - Silver and gold body with silver bands for crown
76 Staff - Two large bones with red notches joined by copper wire
77 Staff - Black body capped with red and blue gemstones
78 Wand - Single twisted bone wrapped in dull iron band
79 Wand - Tiny stones sprouting from wooden body
80 Wand - Rough wood wrapped in twelve leaves
81 Wand - Ivory with humanoid form and upraised arms
82 Wand - Gnarled wood wrapped in feathers at one end
83 Wand - Bone, wood, and amber segments
84 Wand - Twisting stone bound in sticky leather cord
85 Wand - Light metal heats up at one end
86 Wand - Fluid curves opposite small clear gemstone
87 Wand - Notched obsidian shaft with iron grip

Several good choices here, but I'll go with the black Wand with notches along the side and the tennis-racket handle (87). It looks ideally suited to necromantic magic, as does the skull-themed Rod (73) and the two-bone Staff (76).

The Complete Relics of War Rod/Staff/Wand Set is currently available at the Item Card Extravaganza for $8.

Relics of War Scrolls

Three days to go, and out come the 10 scrolls (#62-71) in Relics of War. How interesting can a bunch of paper be, anyway? Pretty interesting, if you're Vincent Dutrait (Check his site for pictures of the items from Hero's Hoard and Item Pack 1).

62 Scroll - Large parchment with massive runic symbol
63 Scroll - Sealed with swatch of spotted fur and wax emblem
64 Scroll - Skull-like musical notes
65 Scroll - Long bolt of fabric with dyed symbols
66 Scroll - Aged parchment with markings written over text
67 Scroll - Papyrus stained in blood and covered with line patterns
68 Scroll - Faded and stained fragment of larger whole
69 Scroll - Intricate geometric patterns increasing in complexity
70 Scroll - Patterns of pulsing lines moist with blood
71 Scroll - Cramped writing and diagrams on bone dowels

My favorite scroll in this set is the plump grey one bound with a white cord (65). I never really looked at it before, but I also like the musical score with little skulls for notes (64).

The Complete Relics of War Scroll Set is currently available at the Item Card Extravaganza for $5.

Adventure Gear Preview #1

Jason just posted a quarter of the set list (and one card) from the upcoming Adventure Gear non-random Item Card Set.

The Dice was a perfect choice to pique my interest. The skipped numbers also makes for a fun guessing game.

Relics of War Rings

Small update today, for the middle of Relics of War week. There are but 5 rings (#57-61) in this set, but that's still 3 more than you can use at one time in D&D.

#57 Ring - Molten gold band, fire pattern gemstone
#58 Ring - Twisting silver, missing gemstone
#59 Ring - Plain silver band with tiny cracks
#60 Ring - Rusty iron, crude amber gemstone
#61 Ring - Black gemstone reflects sliver moon

If I had to wear one of these, I'd go with the plain silver (59). The rusty iron one (60) looks curiously like my high school class ring, though.

The Complete Relics of War Ring Set is currently available at the Item Card Extravaganza for $2.50.

Reduced Price, Greater Flexibility on Matching and Variety Sets

One of the things I'm offering at the Item Card Extravaganza is Matching and Variety sets of Potions, Rings, Scrolls, and Wands. These are currently available from the Relics of War expansion only, but may become available on Hero's Hoard as I get more cards.

A Matching set is for someone who wants all items of the same type (i.e. potions of bull's strength, rings of protection, wands of cure light wounds) to look the same. You can request the particular item and get anywhere from 2 to 9 of them for $.45 each.

A Variety set is for someone who wants a bunch of a certain item, but less than a complete set. I'll pick the items of that type that have the most excess and give you one of each, so there are no duplicates. You can get as few as 2 and as many as 9 (for Potions) or 5 (for Scrolls and Wands) for $.40 each.

Relics of War Potions

Today's image showcases the eighteen new potions in Relics of War (#39-56). You'll find some interesting things in and on these potions, including flowers, fingers, clay faces, and a worm.

39 Potion - Rough green glass with single red pearl
40 Potion - Corked glass with oily black motes and square geometric symbol
41 Potion - Stone bottle encrusted with olive-colored ooze
42 Potion - Round bottle with deep blue liquid containing tiny sparks of light
43 Potion - Clay bottle with wicker base and patterned bands
44 Potion - Clear glass containing ageless white flower
45 Potion - Brown with redcap mushroom symbol and stopper
46 Potion - Brown and tan swirled clay with nozzle tip
47 Potion - Fiery bottle with honey-like liquid wrapped in red flower petals
48 Potion - Glass with oily liquid containing grimacing clay face
49 Potion - Round with blue liquid containing small cloud
50 Potion - Contains decaying severed finger with jagged nail
51 Potion - Glass with thick blue syrup and leaf pattern
52 Potion - Orange glass with charcoal-scribed symbol of small creature
53 Potion - Dirty glass with oily liquid containing foul worm
54 Potion - Aged bronze with briny liquid and stone cap
55 Potion - Oily black muck which stirs itself
56 Potion - Coiled clay stained with a red stripe

As a DM, how can you not love the foul worm and oily liquid in a dirty glass container (53)? That may be a bit too obvious a threat, though, so I'm also a fan of the self-stirring oily black muck (55). The mushroom-stoppered and mushroom labeled brown bottle (45) is another one of my favorites, and would proxy well for a bottle of wine or spirits.

The Complete Relics of War Potion Set is currently available at the Item Card Extravaganza for $9.

28 Nunchaku - Simple chain connecting two silver rods
29 Quarterstaff - Wood with strange markings and oily stains
30 Rapier - Single piece of steel with handguard and quillions
31 Scimitar - Broad blue steel with golden bands on handle
32 Scythe - Jagged iron blade with red-stained wood shaft
33 Shortbow - Green-dyed metal with leaf pattern
34 Shortsword - Steel with glowing gold talon pommel
35 Sickle - Ancient blade with wooden handle
36 Spiked Gauntlet - Red leather with demon-fang spikes
37 Trident - Three steel prongs with spiked shaft

There are quite a few fascinating items in this subset, but my vote goes to the blue steel Scimitar (31/110) with golden bands. Honorable mentions to the demon-faced Flail (20/110) and the fiery curved Greatsword (22/110).

Relics of War Armor

Over the next week I'll post images of the Relics of War expansion by subset. Today's image is all 14 pieces of armor (#1-14).

01 Breastplate - Metal with brass shoulder plates and wide leather belt
02 Chain Shirt - Metal with small leaves as trim
03 Demonhide - Red leather with skull image
04 Half-plate - Iron with feathered shoulder plates and heavenly symbols
05 Hide - Green reptilian
06 Leather Suit - Broad stripes of dyed leather
07 Padded Suit - Stained cloth with broad leather belt
08 Platemail - Gold and silver with simple green symbols
09 Scalemail - Metal scales with single gemstone
10 Studded Leather - Black leather with even metal studs and gold trim
11 Buckler - Single piece of steel with simple design
12 Steel Shield - Steel with symbol of two-headed beast
13 Steel Shield - Silver with snowflake emblem
14 Wooden Shield - Strips of hard wood with brass emblem

My favorite card from this subset is the Half-Plate (04). I like how it appears to have sculpted stomach muscles. The symbol at the top could pass for a cross or an ankh, which would be very useful for a Ptolus campaign.

Anyone want to request the next subset?

What are Item Cards?

For those who have not seen them, Paizo Publishing recently started selling item cards that DMs can hand out to players as visual aids for magic items. They have an attractive visual on the front, a evocative description on the back, and room for notes.

I've been using the cards in my game for the last three months, and the players and I really enjoy them. They make it a lot easier for to determine which PC is carrying which items, and I add a code to each card so I can keep track of where each item was found.

Paizo sells a starter set of 54 non-random items (Item Pack 1), and boosters of 11 random items (Hero's Hoard and Relics of War expansions are now out). This can make it a little difficult to get exactly the cards you want, so I'm selling sets and individual cards.
