What an awesome assortment of items. The brooch has been sorely missed for the common low level brooch of shielding. The brazier, censer, and others round out most of the remaining form factors for SRD items. The ankh rocks for Ptolus campaigns. I suspect the fetish and scarf are two of the other six Pathfinder items.

I'm grouping the Sewer tiles thematically, as they are the most modular tiles to date in the Map Pack series. Here's three tiles where the PCs might enter the sewers, or where they might find themselves in a dead end.

Musings on 4th Edition

My Elements of Power cards got delayed, and I haven't had time to scan Map Pack: Sewers yet, so today I thought I'd chronicle some of my initial thoughts on 4th Edition.

It's been two weeks now since the announcement, and on the whole I am optimistic. As a DM, I've definitely struggled with some of the weaknesses of 3rd Edition, including the pain of generating NPC stats, the wonky rules for special actions in combat, and the frustration of players with needing to rest after running out of daily abilities within the first hour of an day.

I'm playing a Warblade currently and loving it, so I'm glad to hear that the Book of Nine Swords is a significant preview of 4th Edition. I've read the Star Wars Saga Edition previews (and hope to look through the book itself soon), and I think some of the things they've done with skills, critical hits, and talent trees is fantastic (I may incorporate the skill changes into my Ptolus campaign). Many people have also noticed similarities between 4th Edition and World of Warcraft, and I think D&D will benefit from that comparison, even if the similar elements are things that have also been done in other games as well (such as the talents in d20 Modern, or the racial abilities in D&D Online).

I've read most of the new articles on D&D Insider, and most of the staff blogs. It's good to see how excited Mike Mearls and some of the others are. I'm looking forward to the free issues of Dungeon and Dragon magazine, even though I'll miss the paper copies for a time. Still, I've printed out reams of other roleplaying material to read while riding an exercise bike, and I'll probably start doing the same with the new articles.

I'm staying away from most messageboard discussion about 4th Edition for now, because I suspect that the signal to noise ratio is really low (and I have no need for the pessimism). I have some friends who are outraged by the idea of 4th Edition, and I understand the frustration of gamers who've spent thousands on 3.5 source books. I'm glad that I've invested more heavily in minis, maps, and accessories which will cross editions fairly well. But in general, I'm willing to pay for new books if they make the game better for me and my friends.

I'd love to be a 4th Edition playtester if the opportunity arises, but in the meantime I've got several 3.5 campaigns underway as a DM and player, so I'll have my hands full of gaming either way. In fact, I'm looking forward to my warblade getting a few more notches on her sword tonight.

Here's the final location in the Campsites set! This one is suitable for most generic fantasy wilderness travel, which seems to involve trees.

Map Packs are definitely a boon for Ptolus campaigns. I used six Sewer tiles, the Ambush Alley from City, and the Tavern from Village yesterday for the first session.

Dragon's Trove Wondrous Items: Part 1

This is the first time I've split a subset of item cards into two posts, but it's also the first time there have been 33 items in a subset. The wondrous items in this set are awesome! Not only are there a lot of new form factors (goggles, bowl, coin, key, etc), but the repeated item types are also stunning. The one thing that struck me as odd was the number of things described as "yellow".

Dragon's Trove Weapons

There's a lot of good things I could say about the weapons in Dragon's Trove. They include many items which have been sorely missed (bastard sword, darts, javelin) as well as many cool rare items (glaive, kukri, pistol). The artwork is fantastic, especially pieces like the Greataxe and Hammer. And when added to the stash from Hero's Hoard and Relics of War, it finally feels like my armory is fully stocked.

Dragon's Trove Armor

I know I'm in the middle of Map Pack: Campsites, but I have to take a break and start putting up Dragon's Trove. The artwork is fantastic, and the set distribution (fewer potions, more magic items, non-random) has me quite happy. I'm also glad to see so many missing weapons (morningstar) and wondrous items (goggles) finally appear.

There are 13 armor cards in this set, but all of them are quite attractive (as opposed to say the Padded Suit from Relics of War). I don't think I can pick a favorite.

Map Pack Campsites: Mountain Cave

Status Update

Today I return to work after seven weeks of family leave with my three kids. We had a great time, and I wish it could be longer, but there's definitely an adrenaline rush about returning to work. This blog, which pretty much went nowhere during my time off, will also see a surge of activity shortly.

I just added composite images for the Fortress and Mansion map packs, and I reorganized the links on the right. I'll start posting Map Pack: Campsites tiles tomorrow, and then switch over to Dragon's Trove item cards and Map Pack: Sewers later this month. Elements of Power and Map Pack: Temples are also not far away.

On the gaming front, I'm enjoying being a player in my Thursday night game. The DM has created a homebrew campaign setting called Winterscape, where our characters are refugees from an eternal winter in a former dwarven stronghold. I'm playing a female human warblade from the Book of Nine Swords, and she rocks!

I'm also planning on starting a new campaign once a month on Saturdays. The players are familiar with roleplaying, but are not as dedicated as the Thursday night group. I'm planning on using the Ptolus campaign setting, which is incredibly versatile.

Dragon's Trove Previews & Gaming Changes

I'm excited to see the Dragon's Trove Previews on the Paizo Blog. The first preview, the box art, and the advertisement in Dungeon Magazine make it clear that they're getting to most weapons which didn't see the light of day in the first four sets. Preview 2 showcases some beautiful artwork by Vincent Dutrait. And it's hard to beat the price of the new non-random cards.

There's lots of gaming changes going on in my life. On the plus side, I am now a player in a monthly game that meets all day Saturday. The setting is Sharn in Eberron, and the PCs are refugees from Cyre. I'm playing a LE binder/warlock whose philosophy is a lot like Magneto's.

On the minus side, I will no longer be GMing my Age of Worms campaign weekly on Thursday nights after next week. The gaming group will continue at someone else's house with someone else in the GM's seat, and I will probably participate as a player, but I had to make some adjustments now that I'm taking care of three kids and Heather is working full time. I hope we'll be able to continue the Age of Worms by meeting occasionally on a Saturday or Sunday.

Starting Monday I'll be a full time dad until at least the end of July. I'm not sure how much time I'll have to post updates to the blog, but I do have images prepared for Map Pack: Campsites, and I'll do what I can to get a Dragon's Trove gallery up once the cards are available.

Champion's Games: Bloodbath and Beyond

My Age of Worms campaign resumed last night after a six week hiatus. The party just entered the Champion's Games with the team name Bloodbath and Beyond (not original, unfortunately, but funny).

I spent Monday through Wednesday taking care of my new daughter and my two-year old son, so I had some time to get things organized. I put together two sandy WorldWorks Masterboards for the arena floor, and two rows of stands along the sides. I forgot to put miniatures in the stands as spectators, but I'll correct that for next week.

We got to try out the Critical Hit deck for the first time. The duskblade got two critical hits in one round with his elven court blade, shattering the jaw of an opponent and then killing them with a bewildering array. The urban ranger got one critical hit with his dragon rifle which gave him a bonus to AC, and then another critical hit with his axe, which caused his opponent to provoke an attack of opportunity from the duskblade, who promptly rolled a 1.

The Combat Pad was also new to the table, and it served well despite the fact that we only had one combat. I need to get some finer point dry erase markers, but this is definitely a step up from the index cards we were using, which did not allow you to see who was up next.

Farewell, Dungeon. Hello, Pathfinder!

The news is all over RPG messageboards now, but I first heard about it on Slashdot. Wizards of the Coast are taking back the Dungeon and Dragon magazine licenses from Paizo in order to do something online, while Paizo will concentrate on its other product lines and launch a subscription-based adventure path book series called Pathfinder. Paizo's press release is pretty thorough on the subject, including nice preview pictures.

As mentioned in a previous post, I consider Dungeon one of the tools in my DM toolkit. I enjoy the blend of adventures, campaign workbook articles, comics, and letters. Even the advertisements have led to valuable discoveries a time or two. It will be sad to see it go.

That said, I have great confidence in the Paizo staff and their contributing artists and authors. It sounds like many of the component parts of Dungeon (adventure paths, single adventures, comics, etc.) will be moving into their own product lines. Letters from and to the editor will be available in the messageboards and blogs, so the only thing I expect I'll be losing is the advertisements. I assume that (and the book binding) are the main reasons the Pathfinder series will be $20 a month for 96 pages instead of Dungeon's $8.

So I'll probably continue to pick and choose from Paizo's product line the way I do today. I'm not sure if I'll subscribe to Pathfinder, as I've still got 2 1/2 adventure paths ready to run (Age of Worms, Savage Tide, Ptolus). Still, I expect it will be great and I wish Paizo every success!

Map Pack Dungeon: Barracks & Storeroom

The two single tile locations from the Dungeon Chambers set are the Guard Barracks and the Abandoned Storeroom. It was hard to tell the difference at first, as the barracks is incredibly messy and the storeroom is fairly neat, albeit nearly empty.

I haven't had time to pull together a composite image for the Graveyard pack yet, so I'll move on and introduce a location from Map Pack: Dungeon Chambers. First up is the four tiles of the Bridge over Bubbling Lava. If you look closely at the center of the image, you might be able to see the four arrows that tell you how the tiles align with one another (which required guesswork in previous map packs).
